However, experts say that a “cheating day” when we eat a cookie as a piece of chocolate cake is not a recipe for disaster at all, it can even be said that it does not encourage us to get to the desired results faster without the feeling of frustration that we are hungry for something.
However, what we need to know is that such days and situations must be planned in detail and must not happen spontaneously and unplanned, advise experts from the Netherlands who have conducted an interesting study.
The study was attended by a group of 36 men and women who were divided into two groups who were given a particular nutritional program in two weeks.
The first group was told that “they should not cheat,” while the second group got one day a week in which they could afford a cookie that is not within the permitted groceries.
The researchers noticed something interesting: when it comes to the first group that sticks to the strict protocol without breaking the diet, their motivation was greatly reduced if they eat something unacceptable, which also affected their mood the same day.
On the other hand, participants in the second group who were allowed to “cheat” once a week did not have such episodes, nor did they need to afford cookies on other days of the diet, and they also had greater motivation to continue it.
“There is nothing wrong with making a mistake in the diet, as long as you know your limit. However, it is crucial here that these hedonistic moments are planned because unplanned outings can be experienced as a personal failure, which is why we tend to be too strict to ourselves, punish ourselves and feel bad about it, “said the researchers at Tilburg University in the Netherlands .
