Sunscreen is essential to protect the skin from cancer. A new study, however, suggests that it can also cause vitamin D deficiency.

Scientists from the University of California have studied existing clinical studies of vitamin D deficiency and concluded that sunscreen with a 15 or more protective factor can reduce vitamin D production by as much as 99%.
Therefore, they recommend twice a week for at least half an hour to pass in the sun without applying a protective factor. That amount of exposure to sunlight will not increase the risk of skin cancer, and the body will maintain an optimal amount of vitamin D.
